story sourcing week 9

Chosen from 10 news stories published on NewNowNext.com, it's been shown that the sources for the stories are mostly non-elite, such as teachers, victims of bullying, and parents. Elite sources range from politicians, celebrities and LGBT organisations like GLAAD, which is considered an elite source due to the context of the website, and in other contexts wouldn't necessarily play an elite role.

Content Analysis week 8

From picking 8 stories in a range of different story categories, content analysis has shown that the authors of all stories were male, the majority of the stories subjects were male, and all quoted people were either male or transgender. For a website that focusses on "gay" news, it is mainly focussing in the male sense of the word, rather than the LGBT sense of it. There is almost no space for women on the website, neither is there for transgender people (although that seems to be slightly more present.)

news agencies

NewNowNext.com uses no news agencies as their backbone for the newsposts- probably because its niche is too specific for companies like Reuters

  • The website is Owned by Logo which is owned by MTV which is owned by Viacom

  • Logo has a shop that will sell things, but is not responsible for any errors or false sales made through this shop

Case Study - Ownership

The website I picked for my case study is NewNowNext.com. This is a website focuses on (gay) popculture.
The website is owned by Logotv- a small American LGBT tv channel. Therefore, a lot of the published articles are related to Logotv's most popular program; Rupaul's Drag Race.
Logotv itself is owned by Viacom International- which means they also own NewNowNext. This is only mentioned in small writing at the bottom of the page, but NewNowNext gives away a few hints about their owners- for example, they plug websites in a sidecolom titled 'stuff we like'. One of the websites that stood out as very random and unrelated was an MTV related website. This is obviously owned by Viacom International and that, therefore, offers the explanation as to why it is plugged on NewNowNext.
